The Fellowship in Infectious Diseases (ID) is a structured training program accredited with College of Physicians and Surgeons, Pakistan.

Eligibility Criteria: It is a 2nd fellowship program. Candidates must either be FCPS from College of Physicians and Surgeons, Pakistan or Diplomat American board certified in Internal Medicine.

Hospitals approved for Fellowship program in ID: The following hospitals are approved for fellowship training:

  • Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi (AKUH)
  • Indus Hospital & Health Network, Karachi (IHHN)
  • Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation, Karachi (SIUT)
  • Shaheed Mohtrema Benazir Bhutto Trauma Centre, Karachi (SMBBTC)
  • Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital &Cancer Research Centre, Lahore (SKMH)
  • Pak Emirates Military Hospital (PEMH)

The Training

It is a full time fellowship program of 2 years duration.

First year:

  • Mandatory training in microbiology where the fellows are required to learn the gram stains, the interpretation of cultures and sensitivities, Ziehl Neelson stains and interpretation of mycobacterial cultures and sensitivity, microscopy of parasites and basics of mycology.
  • Rounds in the wards and ICU under the supervision of ID consultants.
  • OPD consultations under the supervision of ID consultants.

2nd year:

  • Independent rounds and consultations and discussing the difficult cases with the consultants.
  • Rotations in in accredited hospitals for specialty training like multi-drug resistant TB and rabies at IHHN, nosocomial and multidisciplinary infections at AKUH, Solid organ transplant infections at SIUT, malignancy related infections at SKMH and trauma related infection at SMBBTC, Sindh Aids Control program (SACP) for HIV , Marie Adelaide Leprosy Center for Leprosy.

Academics:

  • Presentations, journal club, guideline reviews and lectures in the respective training centers.
  • ID-clinicopathological (ID-CPC) meeting every month, where fellows are required to present an interesting cases of ID & Microbiology.
  • In-service exam, every 2 months. The exam is prepared according to the FCPS guidelines so that the fellows get the opportunity to have in-depth reading and training in how to appear in final examination.

Research:

  • The fellows are required to do an original research and publish their work in a peer reviewed journal during their 2 years training.

Examination:

  • FCPS examination requires proof of training in ID and microbiology, e-log book maintenance and proof of acceptance of the research article in a peer reviewed journal.
  • The examination is held twice a year. It consists of theory (SAQs and MCQs) and viva (TOACS, long case and short cases).
